What is overdraft
protection, and how does it work?
Overdraft protection services allow you to designate accounts to
transfer funds from in the event of an overdraft in your checking
account. If funds in your checking account are insufficient to cover
items presented for payment (i.e. checks, ATM or debit card
transactions, or ACH withdrawals), funds are transferred from the
designated account(s) with a $4.00 charge per transaction. Overdraft
transfers are permitted up to six times per calendar month*.
Overdraft protection is available from:
- A share
(savings) account or a club account. Overdraft protection transfers
from these types of accounts in $50 increments.
- A line of credit
loan account. Overdraft protection transfers from this type of
account in $100 increments. Overdraft protection line of credit
loans are granted based upon creditworthiness. A separate loan
application is required.
to download the simple overdraft protection application. You can
fax the completed form to our Financial Services Department at
713-460-1654.
*Federal Reserve Regulation D
limits withdrawal transactions made by check, telephone request,
online request, preauthorized debit, or overdraft transfers on
non-transaction accounts to six per calendar month.
What
is Courtesy Pay?
Courtesy Pay is a service that adds a measure of protection to your
personal checking account. Courtesy Pay may, at the credit union’s
sole discretion, cover your insufficient funds items, up to your
approved limit, for one low fee per covered overdraft transaction.
That means, instead of returning an item to the merchant because of
insufficient funds, the credit union may pay the item, saving you
additional charges from the merchant collection companies, in addition
to the credit union’s insufficient funds fee. It saves you the
embarrassment an inadvertent overdraft can cause. It also helps
protect your credit rating.
How does Courtesy Pay work?
Overdrafts on your checking account, up to a limit of $500 [including
the amount of the overdrawn item(s) and the Courtesy Pay fee(s)] may
be honored by the credit union. A $25 fee will be assessed for each
item that draws your account negative. You then have up to 30 days to
bring the account current, either through a direct deposit, transfer
of funds, or a deposit at one of our branch offices.
What if I already have Overdraft Protection?
If you have established other overdraft protection methods, such as a
line of credit or automatic transfer from your other accounts, we will
always look to pay any overdraft by those other methods first before
paying your overdraft utilizing Courtesy Pay and imposing a $25 fee
for each overdraft we pay.
Do I have to apply for this service?
No. We require no applications or additional signatures. As long as
you are a member in good standing which includes having an account
with us for at least 60 days, you make regular deposits to that
account, bring your account back to a positive balance regularly, and
there are no legal orders against the account, your Courtesy Pay
privilege remains activated.
How can I access Courtesy Pay?
Overdrafts may be paid utilizing your Courtesy Pay funds up to the
limits mentioned above for the following types of transactions:
- Checks
- Electronic
Transactions
- On-Line Banking
- Bill-Payer
Service
- ATM
withdrawals and POS transactions. We
strongly recommend that you first perform a balance inquiry before
making an ATM withdrawal. Should you request a withdrawal that
draws your account into the negative, the ATM may honor that request
by drawing on your Courtesy Pay limitand/or any other overdraft
protection you may have with the credit union. The ATM receipt will
show the amount withdrawn. It may not indicate your withdrawal has
taken your account negative or accessed Courtesy Pay and/or other
overdraft protection funds, or charged a fee.
Courtesy Pay is a way for us to provide a higher level of service to
our members by helping protect your account and reputation when an
inadvertent overdraft occurs.
What if I do not want access to Courtesy Pay?
You must make a written request to remove Courtesy Pay from your
account. You may download the
Courtesy Pay Opt-Out Form,
and fax it to our Financial Services Department at (713) 460-1654, or
visit one of our four full service branches.
We are happy to review Courtesy Pay and its features with you, along
with giving you other options to add convenience and ease to your
account. Please call us at (713) 460-1661 or (800) 998-0978.

GAP
Protection
Most insurance policies only cover the “actual cash value” of your
vehicle. This values declines rapidly, especially during the first
few years of ownership, beginning as soon as you leave the
dealership. As a result, there can be a substantial shortfall or
“gap” between your loan balance and the amount your insurance pays to
replace your vehicle. You could end up owing money on a vehicle you
no longer have!
GAP
Protection is a non-insurance product that covers the “gap” by paying
the difference between your primary carrier’s insurance settlement and
your loan balance. The GAP payment covers the insurance deductible up
to $1,000, but does not pay for delinquent payments, late charges,
refundable service warranty contracts, and other insurance-related
charges.
Consider the following example:
|
Original Purchase Price: |
$27,000 |
|
Loan Balance After One Year: |
$23,000 |
|
“Actual Cash Value”
(as determined by Insurance company). |
$19,000 |
|
Shortfall or “gap” if vehicle is stolen or Totaled |
$4,000 |
|
GAP
Benefit (including the deductible, up to $1,000) |
$4,000 |
|
Total out-of-pocket expense:

GAP
Protection is underwritten by WNCFirst Insurance Services, Dallas,
Texas. The purchase of GAP Protection is voluntary and cannot be
required as a condition of loan approval.
