You can pay almost any company or individual in the U.S.  You can pay a company that sends you a bill, such as a utility company or credit card bill, or you can pay a person or company you owe money to but don’t necessarily receive a bill from, like your lawn mowing service.
In addition, you can:

  • Set up automatic payments for recurring bills, like your cable bill or mortgage payment.
  • Make one-time payments for bills that vary each month, like a utility bill.

How do I set up payees for Bill Pay?
Before starting, it is helpful to have recent copies of your current bills available when setting up your payees, because you will be asked to verify or enter payment addresses and account information.
Set up your payees by following these few easy steps:

  1. Log on to the Bill Pay program by logging on to CU Online, then click on “Bill Payments” under the “Services” tab.
  2. Click on the “Payments” tab, then click on the “Payee List” tab.
  3. Select your payee from our payee list by clicking on the “View Entire Merchant Directory” button, or enter the payee name and click “Add Payee.”
  4. Enter the requested information as carefully and accurately as possible, then click “Next.”
  5. Verify the information entered, then click “Accept.”
  6. Follow the same steps for each subsequent payee.

How do I change Bill Pay payee information?
To change the payee’s address or phone number, or your account number, open your payee list, then click on the “View/Edit” button that corresponds to that payee, make the necessary changes, then click “Next.”  Verify the changes, then click “Accept.”

How do I delete a Bill Pay payee?
To delete a Bill Pay payee, open your payee list, then click on the “Delete” button that corresponds to that payee, then click “Accept” to delete the payee.

How far in advance should I schedule a Bill Pay payment?
You can schedule a Bill Pay payment up to one year in advance, but the minimum amount of time is three to five business days before your payment is due.  The minimum number of days varies by payee.  When you are scheduling payments, keep in mind the sending method for that payee.  Remember that payees which are paid by check will require additional time due to the mail.

Can I make same-day Bill Pay payments?
No, since it typically takes three to five business days for your payee to receive payment.
Remember that payments which are entered on weekends or Federal holidays will begin processing on the next business day.

When is the money withdrawn from my account?
The funds will be withdrawn from your checking account on the business day following your payment “Send On” date.  Depending on the payee, your payee will receive the payment within three to five business days.

How can I check the status of a Bill Pay payment?
You can view the current status of a recent Bill Pay payment by clicking on the “Payments” button, then the “Payment History” tab.  This screen will show you the following:

  • Status Date:  The date of the last event associated with the payment.
  • Account:  The account from which the payment is debited.
  • Payee:  The name of the person or company being paid.
  • Ref/Chk#:  The reference number or check number of the payment item.
  • Status:  The current status of the payment.  Generally, the status is either “pending” or “payment sent.”
  • Amount:  the amount of the payment.

This information can be exported into spreadsheet software, such as Microsoft Excel, by clicking the “Export Results” button.

How are my Bill Pay payments sent?
Payees either receive an electronic payment or a check:

  • We send payments electronically to all payees that are capable of receiving funds this way.  To determine if your payees are capable or receiving electronic payments from us, simply use the “View Entire Merchant Directory” button when adding new payees.
  • Companies that are not set up to receive funds electronically from us and payees who are individuals receive a laser-printed paper check sent through the U.S. Postal Service.

When adding new payees, the system will tell you the method of payment.  For all payees that receive electronic payments, you should allow at least three business days for them to receive the payment.  For all payees that receive check payments, you should allow at least five business days.

What happens if I set up a Bill Pay payment, but I do not have sufficient funds in my account?
In this event, one of three things may happen:

  1. If you have set up an overdraft protection option on your account, and the funds are available for transfer, they will be transferred, and your account will incur a $4.00 overdraft transfer fee.
  2. If your account has funds available from Courtesy Pay (overdraft privilege), the payment will be debited from these funds, and your account will incur a $25.00 Courtesy Pay fee.
  3. If funds are not available by either overdraft protection or Courtesy Pay, the item will be cancelled, and you will need to re-submit the payment request.
